Why Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson picked Australia to film his new autobiographical sitcom

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s new autobiographical sitcom was shot in Brisbane, Australia, despite the wrestler-turned actor’s very American upbringing.

In an interview with The Herald Sun on Friday, the director of the project, titled Young Rock, revealed why the location was perfect – despite the difficulty of making ‘America’ look just right at the other side of the world.

Australian director Jeffrey Walker was approached to work on the series, and when Covid saw his other gigs cancelled, was freed up to take the job – however, the production would have to be filmed in the ‘safer location’ of Down Under.

‘For this series, we turned Brisbane into Pennsylvania, Hawaii and Miami,’ Walker told the paper.

‘We even created an arctic tundra. I loved filming Young Rock in South East Queensland. The Australian cast and crew were extraordinary and delivered a very special show for audiences around the world.’

He added that the resulting series is extremely personal to the 48-year-old  Hollywood star.

‘During the table reads, Dwayne explained to all of us that this project means the world to him and his family,’ Walker revealed.

‘It’s a vulnerable position to put yourself in; handing the keys to your life story over to filmmakers on the other side of the world. But he’s very proud of the work’.

The upcoming upcoming NBC series Young Rock, which is being produced by Universal Television, covers Dwayne’s early life and rise to fame, with different actors covering each part of his journey to WWE stardom and beyond.

‘Production is so incredibly important and how we operate is so incredibly important and critical, which is why we are shooting Young Rock under the very strict Covid rules, health and safety regulations and parameters we put in place are second to none,’ the father of three said.

‘I want to thank everyone for complying and for being disciplined with us… we’re doing the best we can to manage and mitigate Covid. Australia, thank you guys so much, and I can’t wait for you to see Young Rock.’
