Sam Burgess looks sombre as he grabs a coffee and a juice after opening up about substance abuse battle and cheating on ex-wife Phoebe during SAS Australia’s premiere

Sam Burgess was spotted walking to his local café on Tuesday morning after his notable debut on last night’s premiere of SAS Australia.

The debut episode saw the NRL star being put into the interrogation room, where he divulged his battles with drugs and alcohol and the affair that led to his divorce with ex-wife Phoebe.

The 32-year-old opted for two healthier beverages when he ordered at the cafe, purchasing a small coffee and juice for himself.

Sam wore a black long-sleeve shirt from the 4B clothing line that he owns with his brother and former NRL player Luke Burgess.

He completed his casual look with a pair of grey Nike shorts, long black socks, grey Nike shoes, black cap with camouflage colours at the front and his trademark Rabbitohs mask.

At one point, Sam used the hand sanitiser that was perched on the café counter as he chatted to the two staff members serving him.

The former Rabbitohs player then left the cafe with his coffee and juice in his hands.

Last night’s premiere had Sam sitting in the interrogation room with the drill instructors after his poor reaction to the tear gas challenge.

Chief drill sergeant Ant Middleton enquired about why he retired from Rugby League, his affair and his issues with drugs and alcohol.

Sam divulged the details about his affair and how he ‘wasn’t the greatest husband’ to Phoebe and ’embarrassed’ her because of the affair.

Ant then asked what he ‘turned to’ after his downwards spiral following the cheating scandal and a police investigation into him.

‘Turned to drinking, taking drugs,’ the NRL star confessed. ‘I thought I could manage that, but it got to the point where I then got pulled DUI, with drugs in my system, which is all over the press again, which stops me from seeing my kids again.’

Sam then told the instructors that he has since checked himself into rehab.

SAS Australia continues tonight at 7:30pm on Seven.
