Machine Gun Kelly dishes about emotional SNL performance which didn’t go as planned

Machine Gun Kelly opened up about his emotional debut on Saturday Night Live in January.

During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that airs on Wednesday, the rocker-rapper dished on why he had to rethink his performance at the last moment, and that he now blames Pete Davidson for knocking him off the stage.

The Texas native, 31, also shared about his first two dates with girlfriend and actress, Megan Fox.

The real scoop: Machine Gun Kelly, 31, explained why he didn’t plan on performing his second song on SNL in January by himself with only his guitar

Off the top of the interview, the host praised MGK (born Colson Baker) for his stripped down version of his song, Lonely, on SNL.

It turns out, just moments before going on stage, the entire lighting board crashed, thus resulting in him having to perform by himself with just his guitar.

‘For the first 20 seconds, I could kind of feel my nerves were like [shaky]. I was like, “How is this happening; like dress rehearsal went so good,”‘ he explained.

‘But as soon as the chorus came, all of the emotion took over, and I think it worked out way better. It felt like everyone connected with just the music instead of all the lights.’

Visibly agreeing the performance was a success, Ellen commented on how ‘the lyrics were beautiful’ and that she ‘loved how raw it was, and that maybe it will give him an inspiration to strip more music down in the future.

After thanking Ellen, Kelly confessed the song was for his dad that passed away last year, that he was ‘waiting for a cathartic moment for a long time’, and that he felt like, randomly, SNL gave him that.

The unexpected SNL drama didn’t end there. At the end of show, MGK ended up falling off the stage with castmember and friend Pete Davidson.

Do you blame him for that?’ the host asked behind a laugh and a smile.

In his explanation of why he does blame Davidson, Kelly compared him to method actors.

‘Pete’s like a method person. Every time I show up and see him, he has a different hair color, a different body shape and type,’ he said.

He then explained how the last time he saw Davidson ‘he was skinny and tatted like me. This time I saw him, he was removing all his tattoos and he’s yoked, and he’s huge like Arnold Schwarzenegger. So I went to give him a “this is a great show hug”, and he’s huge,’ which he said forced them both over [the stage].

Kelly beamed with pride when he chatted about his first two dates with actress Megan Fox, which included dangerously climbing a three-story balcony and swimming with sharks in Bora Bora.

The appearance culminated with him taking the stage to perform his new song, Love Race, featuring Kellin Quinn and Travis Barker.

Kelly dropped his fifth studio album, Tickets To My Downfall, in September 2020.
