Former CSI showrunner Carol Mendelsohn direct the series, which has no actors attached as of yet.

‘This new show is exciting for me personally,’ Wolf said in a statement. ‘We spent the last 30 years on shows that played offense. Now it will be great to play defense, and being able to do it with Carol is an honor and an opportunity for both of us to do television that hasn’t been done before.’

No release date for the show was provided in the announcement so it is unknown when For the Defense will be coming to the small screen.

Law & Order: SVU was renewed for its 24th season, becoming the longest running live action show in history. On April 1, Chris Meloni made his much-anticipated comeback to the franchise, reprising his role as Elliot Stabler in the spinoff Organized Crime. For the Defense will likely join both in the lineup, though Organized Crime has not yet received a second season order.

In the statement released by the network, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming’s president of scripted programming, Lisa Katz, said, ‘We can’t wait to bring audiences the latest chapter of, which will explore a different angle of the criminal justice system.

‘We’re excited about Dick Wolf’s perpetually thought-provoking approach as well his collaboration with Carol Mendelsohn, who we have been eager to do a series with for a long time.’

According to the show’s description, it will be an ‘unbiased’ look at a criminal defense firm that will examine the criminal justice system. Each episode will tell a ‘contemporary morality tale.’

The series will be produced by Universal Studio Group’s Universal Television and Wolf Entertainment. Wolf and Mendelson will both serve as executive producers along with Arthur Forney, Julie Weitz and Peter Jankowski.

Two other Law & Order series are also in the works. Fans can look forward to Law & Order: Hate Crimes as well as the limited series, True Crimes, which will dramatize the Menendez murders. Brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted in 1996 for murdering their parents.
