AFLW player Jessica Trend broke down when she learned her grandmother was dying during Wednesday night’s episode of Big Brother.

And now, the 29-year-old sportswoman has defended her decision to stay on the show despite the family tragedy.

‘It was very hard because nana was in hospital just before I entered the house, and she was looking really good and Facetiming me and she was just about to be let out,’ Jess told the Herald Sun

‘I’m literally telling all the housemates how nana is about to leave hospital and she’s been such a warrior and I said I think she had this fall for a reason before Big Brother so that I got to see she was on the mend and was going OK,’ she continued.

Jess explained her nan had a perforated bowel and tumour, and she learned from her family it was cancerous on the night she entered the house. 

She had a moment in the house when she felt something was up, before her twin brother told her their nan had just 24 hours left.

‘There’s always going to be part of me that wishes I was there in person to say goodbye but I’m very grateful that the Channel Seven production handled it so well and went above and beyond,’ she added.

Following her exit from the house, Jess shared a tribute to her nan on December 3.

‘My Queen, you will forever be the most magical soul to have impacted my life. I love you, I miss you and I will never forget you. Rest in Peace,’ she wrote on Instagram.

Big Brother viewers were left devastated on Wednesday night after emotional scenes aired of Jess discovering her nan had terminal cancer.

She burst into tears as she received her nan’s diagnosis in the Diary Room, before saying her final goodbyes to her over the phone.

During the gut-wrenching scene, Jess was called to the Diary Room and given a mobile phone to speak to her brother.

‘Hey Jess. We need to tell you that nanna isn’t doing too great. They found out that it was cancer, a tumour,’ her brother said.

‘There’s not very long. She’s going to a better place. She gets to go hang out with Pa again.

‘We’re very proud of you, and we all want you to stay as there’s nothing you can do.’

As Jess fought through tears, she said: ‘Just tell her I love her, so much.’

After being comforted by her fellow housemates, Jess was brought back to the Diary Room to say her final goodbye to her beloved grandmother.
