Doctor Doctor will officially end at the conclusion of this season – and star Rodger Corser has now addressed the news with a somber reflection of the series.

The 48-year-old, who played lead character and heart surgeon Hugh Knight for five seasons, made an emotional post to Instagram with a teaser for the final two episodes. 

‘Goodbye Whyhope,’ he said. ‘The cat is truly outa the bag…After 5 amazing years it’s with much joy and sadness we say goodbye to the town of Whyhope.’

‘Joy from all the great memories and sadness that all good things must come to an end,’ he added. ‘Though we feel so lucky to go out as we wished…with a truly satisfying final act and ending to our story.’

Rodger then thanks the fans and loyal viewers, ‘we couldn’t have got here without you. Lots of love from your friends in Whyhope.’

He also thanked his co-stars, crew and the New South Wales towns of Mudgee and Camden (where the show was shot) on Twitter.

Doctor Doctor became one of the most popular homegrown hit drama shows to hit Aussie television screens, running five successful seasons.

Channel Nine confirmed on Thursday morning that a decision had been made to cancel the series after the, currently airing, fifth season. 

The last two episodes of the show will air on Nine on Wednesday nights.

The romantic drama series had Rodger playing Dr Hugh Knight, a charming heart surgeon who is forced to work in his former home town of Whyhope as a country GP as punishment for his hedonistic lifestyle.  

The series carried high ratings and strong audience numbers- averaging between 700-800,000 TV viewers in the first season. The May 26th episode of the current season accumulated 784,000 viewers (when encore and BVOD numbers are included).

In addition to Rodger, the series also included Tina Bursill, Nicole da Silva, Ryan Johnson Chloe Bayliss, Belinda Bromilow and Hayley McElhinney.
