Gabrielle Union recalls being threatened by Neo-Nazis after visiting Croatian bar in 2019: ‘I’ve never experienced that level of hatred’

L.A.’s Finest producer-star Gabrielle Union just revealed a ‘heartbreaking and terrifying’ racist encounter she experienced while visiting the Republic of Croatia back in June 2019.

The Nebraska-born 47-year-old was in Dubrovnik promoting her Spectrum series alongside castmate Jessica Alba during the New Europe Market at the Palace Hotel.

At the time, Gabrielle gushed about Croatia to Dnevnik.hr: ‘Beautiful! Absolutely stunning country, amazing food, beautiful people! Also, I’m a huge Game of Thrones fan, so to walk around King’s Landing made my “fangirl” go nuts. But it was beautiful!’

But it all took a dark turn when Union and her glam squad – hairstylist Larry Sims, stylist Thomas Christos Kikis, and make-up artist Malika James – decided to visit a local bar featuring ‘Jim Crow memorabilia and Neo-Nazi patrons.’

The Flawless co-founder said the menacing group followed them down the street when they left what she had initially believed was a gay bar.

‘I’ve never experienced that level of hatred and the threat of physical violence,’ Gabrielle told People on Tuesday.

‘It was such a jolt. And the fear and adrenaline of what happened left us all numb.’

Union continued: ‘There are microaggressions and there are all out assaults. That’s what it is to be a person of color in this country. We think we’re post racial but we’re not. And that is beyond disappointing.

‘I don’t think people understand the violence that comes with racism, whether it’s if you’re being chased or you’re having to watch someone wear blackface to collect a paycheck. It’s violent.’

The UCLA grad recounts the story in detail in her $22.39 256-page second memoir You Got Anything Stronger?: Stories, which dropped Tuesday.

Gabrielle kicked off her nine-date You Got Anything Stronger book tour on Tuesday night with a reading and Q&A at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn.
