Former Corrie star Matthew Marsden berated for encouraging fans not to get tested for Covid

Former Coronation Street star Matthew Marsden has been berated by Twitter users for encouraging fans not to get tested for Covid-19 and urging them to ditch the face masks.

In a series of tweets, the actor, 48, who swapped Weatherfield for Hollywood, has spoken out about covid vaccinations and the use of facemasks, and even branded the vaccine a ‘chemical’.

And while many users agreed with Matthew, who played Chris Collins in the ITV soap, several spoke out against the star, with one even saying he’s a ‘danger to the health and lives of all humans’.

While in another tweet, he made his views about the vaccine clear as he tweeted: ‘It should not be controversial for someone to advocate for a persons right to choose whether or not they should be injected with a chemical.

‘Personal liberty should be something everyone should get behind. The inconsistency in which it is applied by some, is staggering.’

A third stated that he had got things ‘completely wrong’ in responses to his tweet about protecting the NHS.

In response to his comments about covid testing, a fourth irate Twitter user fumed: ‘Wrong! It goes on forever if we don’t test. Captain sensible here is yet to figure that out…I doubt if he ever will to be fair.

‘It must be difficult as a wealthy actor, having to sit at home as poor people die. My heart goes out to him.’

It comes amid the news that Coronavirus cases are down in every region of England and fewer people over the age of 80 are catching the virus than ever, official data revealed on Thursday — as the UK’s daily Covid deaths and infections remained flat.

Public Health England’s weekly Covid report found just 6.3 per 100,000 people in the most vulnerable age group caught the disease in the week ending April 25, the lowest since surveillance data began last June. The infection rate among over-80s peaked at 623 in mid-January.

For over-60s, the rate was 9.1, down from 9.9 the week before and a high of 454 at the peak of the second wave. Both lockdown restrictions and vaccines — which were given to the elderly first — have helped turn the tide on the crisis.

Every English region also saw falls in cases in the past week — despite millions more tests being deployed — with the lowest rates recorded in the South West (14.2), South East (17.2) and the East of England (20.5).

Meanwhile, the Department of Health’s daily update revealed there were 2,445 cases in the past 24 hours and 22 deaths, with infections down 10 per cent from a week ago and deaths up slightly on the 18 last Thursday.

Latest figures show another 462,000 second and 134,000 first vaccine doses were dished out on Tuesday. It means more than 34million Britons have had at least one dose and 14m have been fully vaccinated.
